What makes “High Notes” High?
Is it a ladder we climb, step-by-step on our way to Mount Everest to get to that “one more” elusive note?
I am going to suggest something to you that may sound crazy, but it’s true.
In many sports (and singing is like a sport), it’s not how we are able to “muscle” our way to the top.
Let’s take golfing, for example:
You have the little guy who is able to hit a golf ball 200 yards further than the big muscle guy who tries to kill it with his club.
The little guy makes it look so effortless.
In soccer, Lionel Messe is only 5′ 7″, and yet he is able to kick further and often times run faster than players who have a whole foot of height on him.
This has to do with the “snap” or “spring” of his step and kick. This is true for the golfer and even the runner as well.
So it is true with the voice.
It’s not that we “power ” or muscle our way to high notes. It’s that we understand how to leverage our technique, like the wrestler who is able use his leverage to take down someone 100 pounds greater than he.
Once we understand that our voice is a muscle, and it works in a similar way, we can use our technique and leverage of other parts of the body, like diaphragmatic support, correct vowel modifications, and release valves (relaxation responses) to help us achieve our ultimate goal.
