Join Now!Phil Collins first picked up the drums at 5 years old in what would be the start of a very long and successful musical career.
He never learned to read music but in addition to the drums he also learned to play the bagpipes.
Collins grew up in London and before launching his music career, he was also a successful child actor.
He would later join the band Genesis in 1970 when he answered an ad they placed in Melody Maker magazine. He was hired as their drummer and later took over as lead singer when Peter Gabriel left the band.
In the 80s Collins embarked on a very successful solo career. He had more US Top 40 singles than any other artist during the 1980s.
He became known for a distinctive gated reverb drum sound on many of his recordings.
He has put out eight studio albums that have sold 33.5 million records in the US and an estimated 150 million worldwide.
Collins is one of only three recording artists (along with Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson ) to have sold over 100 million albums globally both as part of a band and solo.
I’ll be reacting to a later performance of his hit “In The Air Tonight” which also features him drumming.
