The guitar solo on “Beat It” was played by none other than Eddie Van Halen who apparently was persuaded by Quincy Jones to do the gig for free.

Ironically Thriller claimed the number one spot in America for 3 weeks holding off Van Halen’s album 1984 in the number two spot.
Jackson was the first black artist to get regular airplay on MTV and the song helped to build his audience even further by bringing on some Van Halen listeners.
