I have played the piano and sang since I was a child. I grew up in the midwest as a PK (pastor’s kid), and I first learned music at church (remember ‘Psalty the Singing Songbook’?). I took piano lessons from a very young age and was soon playing from my Dad’s guitar lead sheet to help with worship services. Most of my voice training was gleaned from choir directors and worship leaders.
In high school, I was in a couple of musicals and choirs, but my real focus was jazz band, where I played the alto saxephone. My band director caught me flipping through vocal jazz songs and playing around with them, and he invited me to sing with his jazz quartet. I even got to sing ‘Summertime’ on a riverboat in St. Louis. I also started writing songs of my own during this time.
I have a Bible college pre-counseling degree with a music (piano) minor. I loved music theory in college and still do today. After college, I was blessed to get to work under an excellent piano teacher with years of experience. That is where I learned how to teach a group of kids and how to use solfege to play by ear. During that time, my husband and I led a praise and worship band for 10 years. We did everything including setting up the stage, making the slides, writing songs, and recruiting and training the band. I also led a small youth show choir for several years. I recorded a handful of my songs during this time.
8 years ago I moved to the big island of Hawai’i, where I raise kids, dogs, and chickens in the rainforest with my husband. Luckily we have Fiber Optic out here, so I can now do Zoom lessons. I met Ken here on the big island and have been working as his assistant ever since. I have been studying the course for 6 years, more seriously the last 2. I also help answer questions about the course and Ken’s method. I have the convenience of having direct access to Ken, but I actually never had a session with him until this past year. He is definitely a rock star coach. He’s amazing at pushing you to the next level in a motivating way. I hope to emulate that with my students and help you gain more confidence in your voice.
Most recently, I have been very involved in Hilo, Hawai’i’s wonderful world of musical theatre with my 3 daughters. They all sing, and we are constantly having rehearsals it seems. My oldest 2 won a battle with their band last year and recorded one of their original songs. This past year, I got to relive my jazz years singing ‘God Bless the Child’ with an amazing jazz quartet during a fundraiser for Shrek the Musical (a show where I played Queen Lillian, Fairy Godmother, and a Blind Mouse).

What It's Like to Work With Me

Stella
Aunty Zaneta is a wonderful vocal teacher. She has taught me so many exercises. She is always very comfortable to be around. She has also taught me things that I didn’t even know were things like how to switch to my chest voice and then my head voice.

Marie
She’s very patient with me and lets me go at a pace that’s best for me so I can learn more efficiently. She’s a great teacher and encourages me to keep practicing.

Eva
Aunty Zaneta’s vocal lessons have really improved my singing skills, even after only doing one class for about 45 minutes.
I learned things like better breath support, staying in my chest/mixed voice longer, helping the sound resonate better depending on your vowel placement, and much more.
I definitely recommend her lessons.
