When Donnie Iris set out to write his hit “Ah! Leah! with keyboardist Mark Avsec, the duo’s intention was to write an anti-war song. What they ended up with instead was a love song that went on to become Iris’s signature song.

Have any of you songwriters ever attempted to write a song where the final result ended up being the complete opposite of what you had intended? Share with me in the comments!

Iris had initially wanted the tune to have a hook or chorus that sounded like a Gregorian chant but while writing the song Avsec somehow came up with the chant ah, Leah which they both liked.

The song was released as a single back in 1980 and became a Top 10 hit in Canada while reaching number 22 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

I hope you enjoy my take on the tune!
