Janis Joplin’s version of “Me and Bobby McGee” was just the second song to reach number 1 in the US by an artist that already had passed.

Who out there knows what the song was that achieved this status before Janis? Share with me in the comments!

Joplin recorded the song only a few days before her death and songwriter Kris Kristofferson did not even know she had recorded it until after she had already died.

Don McLean’s reference to meeting “a girl who sang the blues” in “American Pie” is apparently referring to Janis’ version of the song and an encounter the singer had with her.

The tune went on to become Joplin’s only number one single and next up our own Kayla Reeves is taking on the tune. Let us know how you thought she stacked up!
