According to mixing engineer Rich Costley, being able to make all of the dynamics work for “The Pretender” proved to be quite challenging because Dave Grohl and drummer Troy Hawkins always want more focus on their instruments.

Grohl has stated the Sesame Street song “One of These Things Is Not Like the Others” may have subconsciously influenced his writing of the song though the subject matter itself is said to allude to political unrest.
While most of the tracks off the album took several weeks to complete, “The Pretender” ended up being completed in just a day.
