Alannah Myles’ 1990 number one hit “Black Velvet” is actually an ode to Elvis Presley with the title referencing both the type of canvas he was usually painted on, along with the name of the hair dye he apparently used.

What other popular songs can you think of that were also written as a tribute to another artist? Let me know in the comments?

The idea for “Black Velvet” came to Myles’ boyfriend at the time Christopher Ward, after he witnessed a bus full of Elvis fans headed to visit Graceland.

The song was released off of Myles’ first album which became Canada’s top-selling debut album of all-time and earned her a Grammy for Best Female Rock Performance.

Kayla Reeves is taking on the tune in this video, we hope you enjoy it!
