I love the original story behind this song and how it was written.
According to Ian Gillan, a reporter had approached him, Ritchie Blackmore, and other members of the band on a bus for an interview.
One of the questions was, “How do you write your songs?”
Ian said: “Usually Ritchie starts out with a riff and I start riffing vocals over the top of it.”
At that moment, Richie grabbed his guitar and started to chunk out the verses to Highway Star.
Ian chimed in with a vocal over the top and, in very short order, out came Highway Star!
I don’t know if this is true or not, but I can’t imagine what that reporter did when Ian started screaming out those high notes, ha, ha!
With great love, admiration, and respect for Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, and the rest of Deep Purple’s members, I thought it would be fun to try my hand at this song!
