Chester Bennington was a rather interesting vocalist!

It’s almost as though he had two gears in his voice.

A pristine, almost “little boy”-like quality when he sang a pure melody, and a “roaring lion” gear when he wanted to get dirty on his tone.

What’s interesting for me as a vocalist and a vocal coach is there are a lot of shades in between clean and dirty, as opposed to how Chester sang.

And it’s also extremely difficult to go from clean to dirty and back as the voice can lock up and have difficulty transitioning between those two tones. Usually, once you get as dirty on a sound as Chester did, it becomes very difficult to get back to a clean tone.

In this video, I demonstrate this toggling between these two vocal tones and added a little bit of my own influence as well.
