Journey – ANY WAY YOU WANT IT – Steve Perry – Isolated Vocals – Analysis and Tutorial

Before Jonathan Cain joined Journey and Greg Rolie was still the keyboardist, the band focused more on those beautiful, massive, stacked harmony sounds like we see in “Any Way You Want It”.

The band’s sound would shift more towards bigger ballad stuff when Cain came on board. Did any of you have a preference over one era more than the other? Share with me in the comments!

In looking at Steve Perry’s isolated vocal track we see in this tune how he sort of combined his legato, long phrase singing together with a bit of a stabby approach.

We’ll also see how Perry got a lot of resonance and mask in his sound by using his nasality to his advantage.
