Rod Stewart’s classic “Maggie May” was the first big hit of the rock era to feature a mandolin and to this day remains the biggest mandolin-based hit ever recorded.

What other notable rock songs can you think of that have also utilized the stringed instrument? Share with me in the comments!

The song came together pretty quickly in the studio and Stewart was able to record it in just two takes. The album version of the song also features a 30 second guitar solo intro named “Henry”.

The tune became Rod’s first substantial hit as a solo performer and launched his solo career. It remains one of his best known songs and Rolling Stone has also named it to their list of The 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time.

We hope you enjoy Kayla’s take on the song and let us know what you thought!
