Van Halen got their start playing in bars, often performing covers by The Kinks. As a result they had perfected playing “You Really Got Me” over the years and chose it as the band’s first single.

The Kinks’ lead singer Ray Davies once said he liked the Van Halen version better, comparing his version to a prop plane and Van Halen’s to a jet fighter.
Released off their self-titled debut album, the song helped jump start Van Halen’s career after which they opened for Journey and then Black Sabbath.
