Singer-Songwriter Lionel Richie was one of the most successful balladeers of the 1980s.
Before his singing career he was actually a great tennis player and received a tennis scholarship to Tuskegee Institute. He ended up dropping out however to join The Commodores.
The Commodores were a funk and soul band and at one point were the opening act for the Jackson 5.
Richie launched his solo career in 1982 and his debut solo album contained three hit singles. Richie generally wrote and sang more romantic, easy-listening ballads.
in 1985, he co-wrote the famine relief song “We Are the World” with Michael Jackson.
He has gone on to sell over 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the world’s best-selling artists of all time.
The great soccer player Lionel Messi was even named after him.
