Alex and Eddie Van Halen were born and raised in Holland but moved with their family to Pasadena California in 1967. Five years later they formed the band Van Halen.

In 1977, Gene Simmons saw them in concert and set up their first recording session. He flew them to New York and bought them all new clothes, but the resulting demo still didn’t get them a record deal. Apparently record companies were reluctant to sign them because disco was in and rock was out.

Ironically they are now credited for “restoring hard rock to the forefront of the music scene”.

The band is known for its energetic live shows and for Eddie Van Halen’s legendary guitar playing.

At one point there were rumors that Van Halen was actually the members of KISS without their make-up and costumes on. Following the releases of Van Halen II and the KISS members’ solo albums, the speculation stopped as fans noticed the height difference between Alex Van Halen and Peter Criss.

Van Halen is 20th on the RIAA list of best-selling artists in the United States and has sold 56 million albums in the States and more than 80 million worldwide.

I’ll be reacting to their first single “You Really Got Me” which was a cover from the Kinks. This song ended up jump starting their career.
