Learning that the song was intended for a different artist Tommy Mottola encouraged Mariah to keep the song for herself. She did so after personalizing the lyrics, key and instrumentation. Mariah has stated that though “Hero” is not her favorite song she recognizes the impact it has had on her many listeners who’ve told her that the ballad helped them through some particularly difficult trials.
