Jon Bon Jovi was the first to dub the term “The Voice” to describe Journey frontman Steve Perry and his singing. Today I’m going to show you how to sing like Steve.

After joining Journey, Steve brought a lighter, more pop and R&B influenced sound to the band which was a departure from their previous rock driven style.

Though fans initially resisted the change in style of the band, they eventually were won over by Steve’s vocals and the new music.

Steve went on to provide the lead vocals on 9 studio albums during his tenure with Journey and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017.

As we look at Steve’s vocal style, I’ll be showing you how he uses mixed air in his sound and how you can use vocal tract shaping to achieve those nice, open vowels.

We’ll be taking a look at a version I did of “Separate Ways” as well as some performances from KTVA students Sonika, Sara Loera, and Kati Cher so you can see how we were able to emulate Steve’s style.

I hope you enjoy the video and please be sure to share your feedback with me in the comments section!
