The lyrics to “Why Can’t This Can’t Be Love” showed Sammy Hagar had a more sentimental streak and marked Van Halen taking a more mature, melodic direction, which proved to be commercially successful.

The track apparently was written by Eddie Van Halen on an Oberheim OB-8 keyboard and he gave permission to Sammy to follow his keyboard melody.
The song also holds the honor of containing the eighth worst lyric of all time according to the Daily Telegraph for the lyric “Only time will tell if we stand the test of time”.
