I wish I could tell you this was a simple subject with a simple answer.

Some would argue that pitch is a simple frequency.

“Perfect Pitch” or “Absolute Pitch” has been relative for hundreds and hundreds of years.

In fact, there are many Eastern Indian people groups that sing in quarter tones and don’t even sing within the related pitch frequencies that we use in the West.

So, after researching this for over 30 years, this is my conclusion.

Pitch, as we know it today, is a standard that has been set up predominantly by the West to be able to standardize musical instruments and music in a way that can be replicated consistently.

However, when it comes to singing, many people find it much easier to sing in 432 Hz than in 440 Hz.

What does that mean?

It means that even pitch is relative, but here’s where I’m going with this.

In this video, I cover the mechanics of singing and bright tones to identify better pitch to the instrumentation that is being sung into.

Darker tones tend to sound more flat to the pitch of a note.

The best and easiest way to learn pitch is to sing single note whole tones and hold those whole tones as best as possible.

Once that is achieved, it is good to veer off those whole tones with simple melodies that do not have much range.

Then, you can try to add notes to include more range so that you can challenge the ear to hear beyond the root note, with a note that the key of the song is in.

As I mention in the video, the higher up we go in range the harder it can be to hear pitch. This is because compression mounts in the head and makes people think they’re hearing a note when they’re actually singing flat.

This must be considered and compensated for when singing.

Come along and we will get good pitch together!
