Aretha Franklin, like so many, got her start singing in church and taught herself piano without knowing how to read music. At the age of 18 she left home to pursue a singing career.
Aretha first signed with Columbia Records and experienced modest success, but after deciding to switch to Atlantic Records in 1966, her career really took off.
She has recorded 112 charted singles on Billboard and is the most charted female artist in history. She was the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and has performed at the inaugurations of three presidents. NASA even named an asteroid after her!
Aretha is one of my all-time favorites and her velvety tone is like no other. For today’s reaction I will be showing a performance of “Dr. Feelgood”. This song was on her first album with Atlantic Records. The record went to number 2 on the Billboard album chart and number 1 on the magazine’s Top R&B Selling chart. It was certified Gold by the RIAA in 1967.
Check out her performance and let me know your feedback!
