Join Now!Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner doesn’t quite have the same ring to it as Sting but that is the name he was born with.
Sting actually earned his famous name from performing in jazz clubs while wearing a yellow and black sweater that made him look like a bee.
He was the primary songwriter, lead singer, and bassist for the Police from 1977 to 1984. He launched a solo career in 1985 and his music has included rock, jazz, reggae, classical, new-age and worldbeat.
Before making music Sting was a tax collector as well as a teacher. Shortly before starting the Police, Sting taught at St Paul’s First School in Cramlington for two years. He began performing jazz in the evenings and weekends during breaks from teaching. The Police song “Don’t Stand So Close to Me” was inspired by Sting’s teaching gig.
With the Police, Sting became one of the world’s best-selling music artists. He has sold over 100 million records between his solo career and with the Police. In 2006, Paste ranked him 62nd of the 100 best living songwriters.
I’ll be reacting to his performance with the Police of “Roxanne”. I hope you enjoy it and please share your feedback!
