How Do I Practice Singing?

Like many disciplines, there are many ways to practice singing. But is it always the correct way? Absolutely not!

In this video, we discuss the best ways to practice your singing voice.

The first thing that you should consider is the training portion.

Like any athlete (and you are a vocal athlete), you need to train correctly to get into “game shape” for singing a song or many songs back to back.

So if we start with training, what should training look like?

I’d like you to consider this illustration.

Let’s say that you hire a physical trainer to help you lose weight.
And let’s say that physical trainer tells you to run up and down the block two times on the first day, three times on the second day, four times on the third day, five times on the fourth day, until finally he has you running up and down that block 10 times.

He didn’t actually teach you anything. All he did was get you to run up and down the block. You gained nothing more than a little bit more physical strength and possibly lost a little weight.

This is precisely the same analogy for vocal coaches that only have their students doing scales.

Yes, you can run up and down that block with your voice, but you’re not really learning anything, and there’s a really good chance you could hurt yourself if you strain or if you overdo it.
And you’ve really developed no technique for range, pitch, power, control, stamina, and so on.

This would be the first place to start. Because once you understand how do use your diaphragm and keep your throat open from pinching and squeezing, you can apply this to singing, and then you can start practicing singing your songs.
