Rainbow – The Man On The Silver Mountain – Ken Tamplin And Rob Rock

Many of you may not know that I was not always a singer and that guitar was my first instrument.

In fact, I joined my first professional band at the age of 19 as a second guitar player to the leader of the band who is billed as “the fastest guitar player in the world”.

To be candid, the band was extremely demanding and one of the most demanding positions in the band was that of the lead singer.

The leader of the band wanted a Steve Perry/Mickey Thomas kind of voice as we rehearsed 18 songs back-to-back, 3-4 times per week, not including gigs on the weekends.

This put extraordinary stress on the vocalists, to the extent that the band went through many, many member changes.

One of the only vocalists that was able to step up to the plate and rise to this kind of stamina and endurance was none other than Rob Rock (I was singing back up vocals to Rob for the time that I was in the band).

Rob went on to record with the band with famed producer Dieter Dierks of The Scorpions.

Rob had intuitively learned some things about glottal compression and how not to over sing in his upper mid-voice to give him the extraordinary ability to sing in a very high range for hours on end without losing his voice.

Rob Rock is an American heavy metal singer who has gained worldwide recognition as the lead vocalist for the supergroup M.A.R.S. and Impellitteri. Rock has also released 4 highly acclaimed solo albums and his live concert video “Live in Atlanta”.

Rock was recently honored as an inductee into the Metal Hall of Fame for his contribution to the metal music scene, thus solidifying his status as a respected figure in the metal community. You can find him at:
