Join Now!Something I find very interesting about this particular era of Journey is this:
“Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” is a song performed by Journey, recorded for their album Frontiers, and released as a single on January 5, 1983.
It was around this time that Journey departed from a lot of the ballad-esque type of songs, obviously looking to make their sound more “edgy.”
Prior to this, Journey had released the following albums:
1) Journey (self titled) Released: April 1, 1975
2) Look into the Future Released: January 3, 1976
3) Next Released: February 9, 1977
4) Infinity Released: January 30, 1978
5) Evolution Released: March 19, 1979
6) Departure Released: February 29, 1980
7) Escape Released: July 17, 1981
and then,
8) Frontiers Released: February 1, 1983
When the 70s were over, and 80s metal started taking over in a big way, creating a much tougher sound, Journey did not want to get left behind.
Hits from the previous albums included “Feeling That Way”, “Wheel In The Sky”, “Loving Touching Squeezing”, “Any Way You Want It”, “Don’t Stop Believing”, “Open Arms”, “Stone In Love”, etc..
By the time Frontiers released, you could hear a clear change in the sound with songs like “Separate Ways” (and this album also included “Faithfully”, which was a heavier ballad than Journey was used to).
I personally believe that Steve Perry was not prepared to sing this heavy vocal sound every single night. His light “Sam Cooke” kind of sound did not carry the girth, power, and rock stamina required to do this.
In fact, in “Separate Ways”, if you listen closely to one of the very end lines “true love won’t desert you” you can hear the amount of strain Steve Perry carries on the word “desert” (and this is the studio recording, not even an attempt to reduplicate this live).
So I thought I would throw my hat in the ring and take on this anthemic piece.
