Bon Jovi has always had a flair for that Cajun blues, middle America, rock sound. I believe it started way back in “Wanted Dead Or Alive.”

“Wanted Dead Or Alive” may even be the reason he was commissioned to make “Blaze Of Glory.”

Nonetheless, I just thought it was a great track to cover.

I love Jon’s lyrics in this song. He always had a knack for taking gospel-esque, biblically-themed lyrics, and make them commercially accessible.

The earliest example of the phrase “Blaze Of Glory” appears in Francis Quarles’s 1621 Hadassa: or The history of Queen Esther, and has been used many times since.

So, with that said, I thought it would be cool to add a small gospel choir to give it that gospel feel.

The imagery that Jon uses in the lyrics to put flesh and blood on the characters in the movie, such as “I wake up in the morning and I raise my weary head. Got an old coat for a pillow, and the Earth was last night’s bed” is genius. Just great songwriting!

Here’s to “Blaze Of Glory” (Maybe this term even inspired the term “Going Out In Flames”?)!

Today, I pay my respects to Jon and cover this epic classic.
