Does Just Singing Scales Make You Better? Gabbi Gun and Ken Tamplin

For all of my singing enthusiasts out there, you will find that this subject is much more important than you realize.

Without exaggeration, most vocal coaches will bring you in for a lesson and drill you over and over again with various vocal scales.

And many people searching the Internet are searching for those elusive scales thinking that this is the path to great singing.

Guess what? It’s not!

If a singer does not understand the correct support and how to shape their vowels correctly, all the scales in the world will not only NOT help them, but could contribute to nodes and/or terrible singing habits that could make you go hoarse, or even cause damage to the vocal folds.

I want to take this a step further.

Do you know what the definition of an expert is? An expert is someone who knows “a little” more than you.

So you go to a vocal coach thinking that because they call themselves a vocal coach, it makes them a maestro.

Now, imagine I’m a fitness coach and you come to me to lose weight. And I make you run up and down the street a couple of times.

You are huffing and puffing and after a week, you start to feel a little more strength in the body. You are losing a little weight and you are thinking “Wow! This physical trainer is really helping me.”

But after a while, all that physical trainer has in their back pocket is to tell you to run up and down that street. They do not really know much more than that, and so you realize you hit a ceiling very quickly on your physical fitness training.

This is exactly what I am referencing when I talk about having students just do scales.

They may think they benefit from it in the first week, two weeks, or even a year, but in the end, they can’t understand why they do not get any farther along in their ability to sing better.
