The many shades of Chris Cornell.

Depending on who you talk to, most people think of Chris Cornell as being one of the greatest modern rock singers of all time.

With his tone and note choices, he was one of the few that were able to marry a kind of 80s metal vocal with the modern rock grunge scene and beyond.

People also associate Chris with his very high vocal range, incredible power and the beastly distortion he had in his voice (ironically Chris and I studied under the same vocal coach, the late Ron Anderson, as did Axl Rose, Sebastian Bach, and many others).

But Chris was not just great at hitting high notes with distortion and power, Chris was incredible with emotion and telling a story. As is evidenced in “Black Hole Sun”.

In Cornell’s own words, “It’s really difficult for a person to create their own life and their own freedom. It’s going to become more and more difficult, and it’s going to create more and more disillusioned people who become dishonest and angry and are willing to f*** the next guy to get what they want. There’s so much stepping on the backs of other people in our profession. We’ve been so lucky that we’ve never had to do that. Part of it was because of our own tenacity, and part of it was because we were lucky.”

Unfortunately, it appears that we are seeing more and more of this daily, so Chris’s words were quite prescient indeed!

Now let’s bring this to Gabbi!

Gabbi is also known for incredible high range power and distortion in her voice and her ability to be very emotional and tell a story.

So we felt this song was very appropriate to try to capture this “beatle-esque” song that was a perfect fit for both fantastic vocalists.
