What makes a great voice? No really! What makes a great voice?

TV shows like American Idol or The Voice would have you believe it’s all about “the high note” (this has been true for opera as well, before we bag too hard on The Voice and AI).

But what about all the notes in between?

A “raspy” sound seems to be a candidate for what makes a great voice. Or a fast bluesy R&B vocal run seems to be another candidate.

And while all those things can be contributing factors…

What about pitch?

What about tone?

What about engaging the audience and being able to tell the story?

What about note choices?

What about emotion and heart?

And what about the technical aspect of a singer?

May I suggest to you that there are many things that go into making a great voice. And while this can be a very subjective subject, and depend on personal preference, I think it’s quite interesting to take a look at the greatest selling artists of all time.

Artists by top sales:

The Beatles: were they “the best singers? No, but they certainly could write a song to get the whole world to sing.
Elvis Presley: maybe, but it was as much about his persona, his live performance panache, his sensitivities and his originating rock and roll.
The Eagles: incredible songwriters, great vocals, great musicians.
Michael Jackson: great singer, great performer, great songs.
Elton John: great performer, great singer songwriter, great performer.
Queen: incredible performer, incredible songwriter, great singer.
Whitney Houston: incredible vocalist, sang for the song, not just the vocal run.
Led Zeppelin: great band, great unique, trendsetting sound, great vocalist.
Taylor Swift: tapped into the relationship breakup storytelling with buy-in from others who resonated with this.
Justin Bieber: heart throb sensation, good vocalist.

What did we learn from this? What was one of the greatest common denominators?
