Metallica was formed when James Hetfield saw and responded to Lars Ulrich’s ads in the Recycler. Lars was looking for people to jam with and the two started the band in 1981.
Today the band is considered one of the “big four” bands of thrash metal and are known for their fast tempos and instrumentals.
The band got their start in the underground music scene and built their fan base from there. The first five albums they put out won critical acclaim.
In total Metallica has released ten studio albums, four live albums, and a cover album. In 2008, when the album Death Magnetic was released, five of their songs became number one in the Billboards Top 200.
They have had 8 official members throughout the 30 years including Dave Mustaine, the first official lead guitarist of the band who transferred to Megadeth in 1983.
The band has played over 1,724 shows in over 60 countries over the 30 years they’ve played.
They have gone on to win nine Grammy Awards and rank as one of the most commercially successful bands of all time, having sold over 125 million albums worldwide.
