Join Now!Before they were Chicago, the band called themselves the Chicago Transit Authority. Doesn’t quite have the same rock vibe to me.
When the band first started out in the late 60s they wrote more politically charged music and they called themselves “a rock and roll band with horns”.
Similar to The Doors they got a regular gig at the Los Angeles club Whisky a Go Go, where they would play on Sunday and Monday nights. Jimi Hendrix actually discovered them there and ended up bringing them on tour with him as his opening act.
The band put together a large string of hits through the 70s and 80s and in 1982 David Foster became their producer for their album Chicago 16.
With Foster the band gradually moved to a softer sound, and produced several hit ballads.
Peter Cetera and Foster became what he referred to as the “power couple” and their new mellower sound also meant less participation from the horn section. This alienated the brass, but was wildly successful. Foster went on to produce their next two albums.
Chicago has gone on to be one of the longest-running and most successful rock groups including one of the world’s best-selling groups of all time, having sold more than 100 million records. Back in 1971, Chicago was the first rock act to sell out Carnegie Hall for a week.
Today I’ll be reacting to a compilation of performances old and new which feature various band members and performers. There were definitely some performances that I preferred more than others. Check it out and let me know what you thought!
